Chung Po-Yuan graduated from the Dept. of Theatre Arts, Taipei National University of the Arts, majoring in theatre directing. He is a well-known theatre playwright and director in Taiwan. His distinctive and diverse stage works adapted from various materials, including myths and legends, local history, social stories, and literature. In 2006, he established Shinehouse Theatre and now has released more than 20 stage works; all of them are people-oriented and reflect contemporary social issues.
Chung is distinguished for adapting famous literary works for his stage productions, including the works by Taiwanese novelists Chang Man-Chuan (張曼娟), Chou Hong-Li (周紘立) and Huang Chun-Ming (黃春明); and great Japanese writers, Mishima Yukio (三島由紀夫)and Miyuki Miyabe (宮部みゆき). He has also shown his solicitude for the local community culture in his plays. One of his urban stage work was based on the true stories he interviewed with prostitutes and homeless people, who are considered two kinds of usual residence in Wan-Hwa (萬華), Taipei. Over the years, Chung toured around Taiwan to connect to the local people with his plays. Wherever he went, he always visited historic sites and learned the essence of the local culture sincerely.
In the year 2011, Shinehouse Theatre received National Youth Contribution Award (青舵獎) granted by Taiwan National Youth Commission, Executive Yuan (行政院青年輔導委員會), to reward its efforts on public affairs and contribution to promoting the education on art and culture in communities. In recent years, Chung has also engaged in Theatre in Education for people with disabilities, pushing forward the development of inclusive theatre in Taiwan. He received the grant from the Youth Village Culture Development Project conducted by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture.
